Edie was born at the height of the Great Depression, to horse breakers in central Wyoming. She had a fairly happy life, growing up on her parent's ranch, and though the world was reeling from economic collapse, Edie barely noticed. They grew their own food and she had the horses and the wilds of the plains to keep her entertained. Caring for the animals on the ranch led to Edie taking an interest in veterinary medicine, which she adapted to nursing when she volunteered to join the Women's Army Corps during the Korean War.
She served in Korea until the end of the war in 1953, and was even the second woman to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, when she was forced to pick up a rifle and lead the other nurses in the defense of the wounded during a particularly violent attack near the end of the war. Returning home, however left Edith - calling herself "Edie" now (but she pronounces it "Eddie"), disenfranchised and dissatisfied with a lot of the trappings of modern life. Shortly after receiving her accolades, she abandoned her life and made her way to Florida, where she encountered a pack of Gangrel and was embraced.
Edie believes she was embraced by the reclusive Crawl, given that he took responsibility for her, and has even claimed in public to be her sire, but the fact of the matter - unbeknownst to Edie, and most other local Kindred - Crawl is a Malkavian. Who knows why he claimed Edie as his Childe - the motives of Crawl are confusing and illogical at the best of times.
During the inevitable violence that erupted when the prince of Jacksonville abandoned his post, Edie handled herself exemplarily - helping to stem thee tide of destruction and save lives. But once again, she found herself in the wind.
During the 80s and 90s, Edie traveled with the Camarilla Justicar, Xaviar. Though she was not present at the Conclave in 1999, when Xaviar withdrew the Gangrel from the sect, she was in the city. In the years since, she has split her time between New Orleans, Chicago, and Seattle (though less and less in Seattle since 2004, when she angered one of the city's influential kindred.
She has largely extricated herself from Kindred affairs, and lives a solitary life on the road - passing from city to city, collecting stories and helping when she can - acting as a mediator, a cleaner, and a fixer for Kindred who can pay the price. If called upon by her clan to act, she will act. Mostly, she just spends her time experiencing what life after death has to offer.
Lately though, Edie's begun to feel unmoored. After passing through Wyoming, she learned that the Ducaigne Ranche - her childhood home - had long since passed into the hands of strangers, the land swallowed by time and debt. Whatever legacy her parents hoped to leave behind was gone.
It wasn't exactly a surprise, but something about seeing it GONE made it real. In the quiet spaces between nights, the loss stirred something in Edie - a need to build something, anything, that might endure. She doesn't yet know what form that will take. But there's still a piece of her, a deeply buried sliver of humanity, that wants to leave a mark on the world. A meaningful one.
